A Working Life: Ukulele Teacher

“How do her lessons work as a team builder?” “You have to listen to each other and work together to make music. As the ukulele is much easier than many instruments to play, it means you can make music in an hour. The ukulele is a great leveller; I’d love to see George Osborne and his team at the Treasury giving it some welly to Teenage Kicks.” Featured In The Guardian - 30th July 2010

Lorraine and Frank Skinner in the BBC documentary about George Formby

The rise in popularity of the ukulele in UK schools

Lorraine with one of her bands, KaraUke, in a feature about rise of the Ukulele as a child’s first instrument due to it’s more forgiving tone, and the ability to sing along when the ukulele is played. It is also fantastic for adults who have never previously played any music - very easy to learn.

I found it really useful, and I’ve been practising regularly since, and now the course has finished I can see how much I learned. There were lots of little tips that were really really helpful (from placing your ukulele face down through to how to position your fingers and how to make smoother transitions from one chord to another). I didn’t exactly enjoy the course, because I was so far behind the rest of the class, and I couldn’t ever master anything new during the class itself, but I did learn a lot from it and I’ve really enjoyed playing my uke since – and that is solely because of the course. I was stuck and it moved me on. It was helpful being able to email you in between classes, and it was really helpful when you said that it didn’t matter if I couldn’t do it in class, as long as I kept practising whatever we’d learnt between classes.
